After we talked about it I started thinking more about it...because planning is what I do. As many of you know or have experienced there is usually a wait list for good preschools or daycares. So I thought it would be a good idea to plan it out in my head just so I would know when I needed to make some calls.
And that is when I figured out that my child will start kindergarten in 2017. Having a date placed on it kind of freaked me out! I've just never thought about it that way before! I realize that is still 3 years away so I am not crying just yet but knowing that I only have 3 more years of her at home with me makes me a little sentimental.
I even called my friend Sarah (teacher) to confirm my math. In Arkansas, the child has to be 5 on or before August 1st to start kindergarten that year. So Blakely misses the cutoff by a couple of months. That means she will start kindergarten 2 months before she turns six, in 2017. She will always be one of the oldest in her class and I think that is great. Starting children in school a year early is not an option in the public schools here. (Sarah wouldn't let me do it even if it were but there is no need to get into that today!) If I would have had Blakely a couple of months sooner then I would only have 2 years left at home with her. So we kind of have an extra year together and an extra year of MDO/preschool/whatever we decide. Sweet deal.
Have any of you put a date in your head about when your kids will head off to big kid school?
As of right now (because when it gets closer you know I will be researching ALL of the school possibilities) Blakely will go to school where I went to school all 13 years. And because you read through this nonsense you get a picture of my kindergarten class. Can you find me? ;) Good luck because it is a terrible picture!
Five year old Kelly circa 1987

5 year old Kelly is adorable! Yeah so Shane currently receives speech services with Early Intervention because of his speech delay. They only see children until their third birthday and then they are released to the public school system to receive speech services. So if Shane follows in his sister's footsteps, he will be starting preschool the week following his third birthday. And that is LESS than a year away. Cue mommy freak out.
ReplyDeleteTaylor starts school one year ahead of Blakely even though Taylor is only 3 days older. In NY, the cutoff is 11/30. That's just insane!
ReplyDeleteOur cutoff is October 1st, but Avery is going late and the public school system doesn't get a say in when my daughter goes to school! Avery will be going to kindergarten when she is 5 (turning 6 less than 2 months in, like B).
ReplyDeleteI want her to be one of the oldest, one of the more mature. I am so with you on this and wouldn't go any other way!
Some kids would be ready, Avery wouldn't be.
Anyways, I love that AK sets the cutoff so early!
Also, I found you instantly! You look just the same!
First it's the stress of finding a babysitter, then preschool, then school school. AR isn't even two yet and we're already discussing preschool for when she turns 3!
ReplyDeleteI picked you out in like 1.5 seconds- you're adorable. And let's not talk about 2017, mmmmkay?
ReplyDeleteAiden and Callen are also both going to be home an extra year with me because our district cuts them off on Sept 15. I don't want Aiden to be the youngest in his class (maturity reasons) and the teacher in me would rather him be the oldest and have that extra year in preschool. Speaking of preschool, that is a huge issue here. There is a Christian one, and a low income one. That's it. UGH. Maybe we will move and then choosing one won't be so tough! LOL YOU ARE SOOOO CUTE in your picture!
ReplyDeleteMira is going to start kindergarten when she's four (2016) and she'll probably start public pre-k in just a year and a half! The New York City cutoff is December 31, and they do not allow redshirting. It's one of the many, many reasons I'm glad I have girls--school is often so much easier for girls than for boys early on.
ReplyDeleteHow cute were you?!?! Adorable!! :) The school Lids started at this January is actually the preschool / kindergarten she will continue to go to until 2nd grade so in a way, she has already started, which will definitely help it to not feel like a big step when it is actually is kindergarten she is starting. It did feel like a big step in January though! She is the youngest in the school so it isn't really normal for kids to be there already but she does well. All of the kids are only half day, so that part is even the same as it will be for a while. The big changes will come after she ages out of that school when we decide what she will do. Most likely she will be in our school half day and doing some extra home schooling with me and a Spanish tutor the other half of the day.. but that is a loooong way off so who knows what will be happening then! And I refuse to think about it get! ;) That would be 2019?!?
